Prior to the design of any space system, it is important to consider how the satellite will interact with its orbital environment such as the ambient plasma, the electric and magnetic fields and solar radiation. This harsh space weather environment is always changing and depending on where and when, it may cause severe satellite charging. This may manifest itself in two types of effects:
i) damage to onboard electronics via arcing
ii) interferences with the scientific or communication instruments.

These ionospheric plasma environmental conditions are similar to where most LEO small sats are in orbit.
